 ABOUT HOME SWEET HOME

Home Sweet Home Pet Sitting has more than 20 years of individual experience, including 16 years as a zookeeper, more than 4 years at tri-State Bird Rescue, and an entire adult life full of cat rescue and owning/showing my own horses!!

My name is Jill Palmer, and I have been an animal lover ever since I could see how beautiful the birds looked outside, or how soft the fur of our cat felt!  I am the sole owner and caregiver for my new company, "Home Sweet Home Pet Sitting."   I have a life full of experiences to make "Home Sweet Home" one of the best pet sitting businesses around!

From an early age, I was always carrying baby birds home or finding stray cats and BEGGING to keep them.  This evolved into doing impromptu training sessions with the family's Doberman Pinschers.  Times were tough for the family, but I nonetheless proceeded to fall in love with horses!

I initially cleaned stalls to earn riding lessons, and somehow this evolved through time into owning my own horse (A "Mutt") and cleaning stalls just to keep him stabled!  I soon was showing the local english show circuit, competing in equestrian and hunter/jumping classes.
All the while, I was "finding" (or did they find me?) stray cats and placing many of them.  This evolved into larger scale cat rescue, spaying and neutering all I could find with some of the generous local vets and rescue groups!  Of course, this was financially draining and I still find it hard to detatch myself!  You'll  see on my link
page some of the local rescue groups which do GREAT work rescuing homeless animals.
In 1984-1989, I was a volunteer at Tri-State Bird Rescue, and then a shift supervisor and student intern studying the effects of pesticides on wild birds.  This study was a research study done in conjunction with the University of Delaware, where I graduated from in 1989 with a major in wildlife conservation and a minor in biology.  At Tri-State, I gained a wealth of experience with birds in general but also the intricacies of giving oral and injectable medications, fracture immobilization, and behavior in both sick and healthy animals.
I was a keeper at the Philadelphia Zoo for the past sixteen years, working in the bird department as a keeper then a senior keeper.  I graduated the Cornell Course in Ornithology, as well as completing an intensive animal training course given by Natural Encounters, Inc..  One of my accomplishments at the zoo was training our hyacinth macaws to voluntarily step on a scale, crating voluntarily and other behaviors attained by training with positive reinforcement.

I am involved with two great local rescue groups!

One is PurringPals (www.purringpals.org) and they do excellent work to help assist
homeless cats and kittens.  They are often filled up and cannot accept new kitties but are in desperate need of donations, supplies, foster homes, and nice people to adopt what we rescue!  We can always offer advice if we are filled, which unfortunately nowadays is common.  If you can offer any help please contact one of us as we always have kitties who need forever homes!!

Another group is Lost and Found Dog Rescue (www.lostandfounddogrescue.org)  Home Sweet Home Pet Sitting is the recommended pet sitter for Lost and Found Dog Rescue.  While doing occasional pet sitting for these great dogs , I am always amazed at how many nice dogs are on the brink of euthanasia.  Thanks to Lost and Found Dog Rescue, some of these great pups can be saved but we need help from people like you who may be able to offer a foster home, a donation, some supplies or food, or better yet a forever home once and for all!!  Give a good dog a chance and they will pay you back ten fold throughout your life!
